Robyn, from Hunter Horseboxes, faced challenges with her mare Peppa, who showed stallion-like behaviour whenever she was in season. This behaviour affected their relationship and posed difficulties in handling Peppa effectively. After a recommendation from Kelato’s Suzanne, Robyn decided to try BetaMARE.
Behavioural issues are common in mares
A mare’s mood swings are typically accompanied by irritability, muscular tension, erratic behaviour patterns and a generally uncooperative attitude. This quintessential “mare-ish” behaviour can cause disruptions to training and competition schedules, as some mares become reactive, hard to handle or unfocused in their work.
Like many other mares, Peppa displayed aggressive behaviour, including ears back at feed time and aggression towards other horses, particularly when she was in season. The behaviour was getting to a point where Robyn even considered returning Peppa to her breeder. Therefore she needed a solution to improve Peppa’s behaviour in order to work on their relationship.
Kelato’s BetaMARE as a solution for better behaviour
Kelato’s BetaMARE, a concentrated chasteberry supplement, was recommended as a solution to support normal balanced behaviour in mares. Chasteberry has a long traditional history of use to help balance behaviour fluctuations in mares. Supplementation with chasteberry can help improve the mare’s mood, aiding relaxation and cooperation.
Despite being sceptical at first, Robyn decided to try BetaMARE to address Peppa’s behavioural issues.
Chasteberry extract in BetaMARE ensures consistency between product batches
A common problem with feeding raw herbs (whether whole, dried or powdered) is the variation between batches. The level of actives in raw herbs can be influenced by a range of factors such as stage of growth, and seasonal and environmental conditions (soil type, pH, water, etc). So it is difficult to determine an effective feeding rate unless a standardised herbal extract is used. For this reason, Kelato Animal Health use a concentrated, standardised chasteberry extract in BetaMARE to ensure consistency and efficacy between product batches.
Peppa became less spicy – a significant improvement
Within just four days of starting BetaMARE, Robyn noticed a significant improvement in Peppa’s behaviour. Peppa showed reduced aggression around other horses and there were no signs of ears back at feed time. In addition to that, within just one month Peppa could be ridden without losing focus. Peppa’s trainer, Ainslie Daniels, emphasised the effectiveness of BetaMARE and advised Robyn to continue feeding the product to Peppa. Robyn concluded that BetaMARE was the most effective product she had used as it positively affected her relationship with Peppa and improved Peppa’s focus and behaviour.
“It is, without a doubt, the single most effective product I’ve used. It’s had a huge impact on our relationship and Peppa’s focus. It really does work, and I won’t be without it!” – Robyn
