Ask any showy and they’ll tell you that to win a Champion title at a Royal Show is to achieve an ultimate ambition. The prestige, the atmosphere of the main arena and with the crowds watching on, it’s an exhilarating experience and for most riders, the culmination of months, even years of hard work and preparation.
It’s a journey that Stock horse competitor and Kelato sponsored rider Jaci Norris knows well, the 30 year old winning the highly coveted Champion ASH Hack title with four year old Glen Lee Rivoli Lynx at Sydney Royal in 2017.
Jaci says it was without a doubt the best moment of her life, she just wishes she could properly remember it! “It’s a total blur, even though I thought he’d worked out well in the Champion class, we were against some seriously successful horses, I look at the photos now and can’t recall the moment, I just couldn’t believe it was happening”.
While receiving the garland was a wonderful shock, Jaci is no stranger to showing at Royal level, having first competed at both Sydney and Canberra Royal when she was just six. Jaci has lived and breathed stock horses since she was a toddler and has ridden at state and national level ASH events. Both her mum Vicki Mascord and grandmother Reva Flint are well known in the stock horse community and have also won blue ribbons at Sydney. This was the first Champion sash in the family though, and what made it particularly special for Jaci was the fact that she achieved the win on a horse she has worked with since buying him as a lightly handled yearling
Jaci’s journey with Lynx began in 2013, her plan for the Heritage Australian Stock Horse was to take him through the ASH Futurity events starting as a yearling through to open competition. The partnership has also led to Jaci becoming an ambassador and sponsored rider for Kelato Animal Health as she sought advice on ways to ensure optimum health and wellbeing for Lynx in his important early years of growth and as his training increased, “it was over a year ago now, we were working hard, had some big shows coming up including Bathurst Royal and I was told about ZanoBOLIC. I tried it hoping to maximize Lynx’s condition and it couldn’t have worked any better, he looked a million dollars and I was especially pleased that it didn’t change his temperament”.
The link between horses feeling good and performing well is one Jaci believes in wholeheartedly and she’s been particular about balancing Lynx’s schooling with diet and carefully chosen nutritional supplements. There’s no doubt that overall appearance plays an important part in any showing situation and for Jaci, ZanoBOLIC has been a key to this, “whenever he’s in work, Lynx is on ZanoBOLIC, it’s helped develop great topline, I’ve also noticed his colour has deepened, he’s shiny and he maintains that condition right through show season, without clipping or using lights.”
Their Champion win at Sydney Royal was a fairytale moment but also recognition of a quality, healthy horse, beautifully schooled and in immaculate condition. For Jaci, the reality took a while to sink in, especially considering she was hoping simply for a call-in in one of their classes, unsure that Lynx was going to be able to handle the atmosphere. The moment he tried to eat the garland, assured her that he was indeed coping just fine!
After some time off at home in Orange in the New South Wales central west where Jaci lives with husband Andrew, Lynx is gearing up once again for the show season, “I’m really lucky, when we have breaks in training he doesn’t seem bothered at all and just picks up where we left off. The best thing is that I know that with Kelato’s fantastic products he’s going to be looking good and feeling great when I take his rugs off!”
Kelato Animal Health is proud to sponsor Jaci Norris and Glen Lee Rivoli Lynx.
